This is where we discuss our needles and their accessories. They’re traditionally known as ‘insulin needles’, however, they’re designed to be universal, meaning they can be used as: Mounjaro needles, Wegovy needles, Ozempic needles.

We also stock sharps bins and pre-injection swabs, ensuring you can maximise the safety and effectiveness of your injections.

About Insulin Pen Needles

Here’s where you can learn everything you need to know about using insulin needles for Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic.

Note: We will refer to Wegovy, Mounjaro and Ozempic pen needles interchangeably throughout the FAQs

What are pen needles and why are they important for weight management injections?

Pen needles are sterile, disposable needles used with injector pens (like those used for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic) to administer medication subcutaneously (just under the skin). They are crucial for safe, effective injection, ensuring the correct dose is delivered with minimal pain or discomfort.

Are all pen needles the same?

No, even despite being universal across pens. Mounjaro pen needles come in various lengths and gauges (thicknesses). The appropriate needle length and gauge depend on individual factors like body type and injection site (where on the body), and your healthcare provider will advise on the needle most suitable for you. Make sure to use the correct size to ensure the medication is delivered to the subcutaneous tissue and not too deeply into the muscle.

Can I reuse pen needles?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Wegovy pen needles are designed for single use only. Reusing needles can lead to several problems, including:

  • Increased risk of infection, as needles become contaminated after use.
  • Pain and tissue damage, as the tip of the needle can significantly dull and bend after just one injection, causing more pain, bruising or even tissue damage on subsequent uses.
  • Blocked needles, such as when medication crystallises inside the needle, blocking it and preventing proper dosing.
  • Inaccurate dosing, as a dull or blocked needle, can lead to an incomplete or incorrect dose of medication.

How do I attach a Wegovy pen needle to my Wegovy pen?

  • Remove the protective paper tab from the outer needle cap.
  • Push the capped needle straight onto the pen and twist it on until it is secure.
  • Pull off the outer needle cap.
  • Pull off the inner needle cap.

Note: Always refer to the specific instructions provided with your specific pen and pen needles for detailed steps.

Should I remove the needle after each injection?

Yes, you need to remove any sort of Mounjaro pen needle immediately after each injection. As stated in all GLP-1 agonist storage guidelines, "Remove the needle post-injection; otherwise, you might risk infections. " Removing the needle also prevents air from entering the pen and medication from leaking out, ensuring proper dosing and hygiene.

About Pre-Injection Swabs (Alcohol Wipes)

What are pre-injection swabs, and why should I use them?

Pre-injection swabs generally take the form of alcohol wipes and are used to clean the injection site on your skin before administering the medication. This helps to reduce the riskof infection by removing bacteria from the skin's surface.

How do I properly use a pre-injection swab?

  • Choose an injection site (e.g., abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, as advised by your doctor).
  • Clean the chosen area with the alcohol swab, wiping in a circular motion outwards from the center of the site.
  • Allow the alcohol to air dry completely before injecting. Do not fan or blow on the area, as this might reintroduce germs.

Can I reuse pre-injection swabs?

No, pre-injection swabs are for single use only. Once used, they are no longer clean andsterile, meaning they have to be discarded.

About Sharps Bins

What is a sharps bin and why do I need one?

Sharps bins (also known as a sharps container) are specially designed, puncture-resistant containers used for the safe disposal of "sharps" – items that can cut or puncture, such as used pen needles, lancets and syringes. They protect you, your family and waste disposal workers from accidental sticks and potential infections.

How do I dispose of used pen needles in a sharps bin?

Immediately after removing the needle from your pen, carefully place the entire needle(with its protective cap if it has one, but ideally directly into the bin) into the sharps bin. Makesure the needle points downwards and does not stick out of the opening. Do not try to recap, bend, or break needles as this will increase the risk of a needle stick injury.

How to dispose of sharps bins?

  • Sharps bin disposal should be completed when it is about two-thirds to three-quarters full. This prevents overfilling, which could cause needles to protrude or the container to break.
  • Never push down the contents of the sharps bin with your hands.

Once you’ve filled the sharps bin carefully enough, you should dispose of it from your home in one of the following ways:

  • Returning it to a local pharmacy (if available)
  • Arranging a collection by the local council or a clinical waste service.

You should never dispose of sharps bins in typical waste bins or recycling bins. If in doubt, check with your local council, authority or healthcare providers for specific disposalguidelines.

Where can I get a sharps bin?

You can typically obtain sharps bins from pharmacies, healthcare providers or medicalsupply stores. As you can see, we stock Needles, Swabs and Sharps bins here at the VirtualSlimming Clinic.

What should I do if I get a needle stick injury?

If you experience a needle stick injury:

  • Wash the wound carefully and thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Encourage bleeding from the wound with squeezing or pushing.
  • Do not scrub the wound as this can increase the risk of infection.
  • Contact a GP or local urgent care center immediately for advice and potential
  • post-exposure prophylaxis.
